SLIC at PRIAE

PRIAE (Policy Research Institute on Ageing and Ethnicity) is the only organisation specialising in helping BME older people, the organisation occupies a unique position and plays an essential role in policy, research, information and practice on:

  • Employment and income
  • Health, social care and housing
  • Pensions and
  • Quality of life

PRIAE works with BME elders and age organisations, policy makers, research bodies, healthcare providers and the voluntary sector to produce ground-breaking work.

The SLIC project is very relevant to the work of PRIAE. Adult learning opportunities for BME older people impacts on their ability to achieve a high quality of life and are core to PRIAE’s work. Some past work examples are summarised below where we will use our experience from these to further incorporate the learning into SLIC within our organisation and also to the wider audience / stakeholders and networks we work within across the UK.

  • Manchester City Council Progressive Agenda 2010 - creating a template of good practice and making a substantial contribution to a comprehensive agenda aimed at improving the quality of life for  BME elders in Manchester, UK
  • CEMESME  (Contribution to Ethnic Minority Employees to SMEs) Training programme - developed DVD based training to skill BME individuals
  • Minority Leadership European Network - to give recognition to the role of leaders from minority ethnic groups

Through PRIAE’s AIM project (Activates, Inspires and Motivates), BME elders are supported to be more active - working with them rather than on them. The AIM project has produced a DVD resource that engages BME elders and promotes active ageing by advocating culturally sensitive physical activities. Also, PRIAE formally launched its Policy Forum on Ageing and Ethnicity. The Policy Forum is bringing together policymakers, BME elders, voluntary organisations and a range of stakeholders to develop innovative solutions to some of the key policy challenges affecting BME elders.
