Ways to identify skills and potential

In the course of a 6-months research phase carried out by all SLIC partners over 50 ways were found to assess skills and competences. These tools were used in formal and informal learning as well as volunteering. The results of the research phase can also be found in the National Reports from Austria, England, Finland, Hungary, Italy and Scotland.

As the aim of the SLIC project is to develop a workshop for older people, the following areas were selected as most relevant:

  • workshop design
  • skills profiles
  • action plans
  • certificates

Finally, 34 particular methods were chosen which are applicable to the group of older learners and older volunteers. Some methods can be used free of charge, and some are available commercially. An overview of these methods was compiled. Whatever methods are used in a learning environment, it is important to create a positive and happy social atmosphere.

Skills Profile

The purpose and meaning of a skills profile in later life, more commonly used for someone wishing to re-enter the labour market, needs to be explored carefully. A skills profile can be used to plan an active retirement. Studies confirm that engaging in different types of activities and lifelong learning reduces the risk of isolation and depression in later life and even can enhance people’s longevity and “joie de vivre”.

Action plans

These are useful to show individuals the spectrum of possibilities open to them and to plan their way forward step by step.

Good examples

The “Quali-Box” (Germany) summarises skills and competences in six modules.

The “Recreational Activity Study Book” (Finland) encourages learners to record their different learning experiences.

The “Silver Net Association” (Hungary) is an initiative which supports older people to use the internet and to plan their own activities.

The "AVE Portfolio" - Assessing Voluntary Experience (Hungary) was developed by the AVE-project.  It consists of nine parts and the aim of the Portfolio is to identify, evaluate and validate skills and qualifications acquired through informal learning in volunteering.
