Project
Aims
The aims of the SLIC-project were to:
- Help older people to become more active in their community
- Support older people to become more confident and take part in formal and informal learning
- Increase older people’s self-esteem and feelings of usefulness
Target groups
There were in essence two target groups for the SLIC-project:
- Volunteers and learners over 50 who are already very active and possible role models for their peers
- Older people who are not yet engaged in community activity or formal learning but who could be encouraged to become involved
New Approach
SLIC developed a new approach based on the following methods:
- Two-day interactive workshops
- Personal skills profiling with action plans to help participants review their employment, life experiences, interests, and qualifications and use these to make future plans
- Awarding an informal SLIC-certificate to recognise individual skills and experience
- Production of a handbook illustrating how to facilitate similar SLIC-workshops
Follow up
As a follow-up of the project it is anticipated that organisations from different sectors will encourage and support older people in peer learning. This means that SLIC-workshop participants will be able to run interactive workshops in their local communities using the SLIC-handbook as a guide.
