Background
Adult learning has an important role to play when meeting the challenges of demographic change. The population in Europe is ageing and over the next 30 years one in three Europeans will be over 60 years old. This will have a major impact on society and on the economy, which will have consequences for the provision, but also needs, of the education and training systems.
The SLIC I and II - projects emphasise the role of adult learning as one major factor of active ageing. The project aims to develop methods to empower older people to become active citizens and at the same time develop their skills and competences through formal and informal learning opportunities. Older people are to a certain extent already active in non-governmental organisations, and through the SLIC I and II projects older citizens are now provided with a tool that increases their knowledge and consequently become more active in society all over Europe.
